Master the Situational Job Interview

Job interviews are stressful, especially when you are asked situational questions by the interviewer. Situational questions are hypothetical, aiming to reveal what you would do in a given situation. Your answer can convince your potential employer you have what it takes to succeed, but you need to be prepared. Use the following tips and Impress the hiring manager as you face these challenging questions.

Highlight your skills the company is in need of.

Before your interview, you should know what the company wants out of a candidate. After researching the position you’re interviewing for, you can brainstorm possible situational questions you are most likely to be asked. Create a few basic facts or answers you can easily modify on the spot. That way, you’ll enter the interview feeling confident and comfortable, no matter how tricky the question.

Take time to think about the question.

When a hiring manager asks a situational question during your interview, don't rush to answer. There is nothing wrong with saying you want to think for a moment in order to formulate the strongest possible response. The interviewer will appreciate your focused attention and care for detail.

Provide clear answers with examples.

Make sure you completely answer the question and provide context from your experiences. Whenever possible, incorporate specific examples of how you have solved similar problems or addressed similar issues. By applying your real-world knowledge and expertise, you can demonstrate you’re the perfect candidate for the position.

If you are ready for the situational question, you’ll make a strong, positive impression and hopefully get hired for the job of your dreams.
