April 2015 Employment Update
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) April labor report showed employment increased by 223,000, compared to the past 3 months, where job gains averaged about 191,000 per month. Additionally, the US added 16,100 more temporary jobs in April than March. Employment increased in professional and business services, healthcare & construction.
Employment increased in several key sectors, below are the highlights:
Professional and Business Services
Professional and business services added 62,000 jobs in April. Employment continued to trend up in April in computer systems design and related services (+9,000), in business support services (+7,000) and in management and technical consulting services (+6,000).
Healthcare employment increased by 45,000 jobs in April. Jason Bruckman, Vice President of Workforce Recruitment in Las Vegas shared that although Las Vegas still has the highest unemployment rate across the nation at 7.2%, over the past few months there has been an uptick in healthcare positions in the Las Vegas market. Jason further elaborated that, “The trend in Las Vegas is a result of the Affordable Care Act and since there are more patients, healthcare organizations are hiring qualified professionals who share a common passion for improving the delivery of patient care.”
Construction to see continual growth over the next couple of months and competition for a qualified workforce will intensify. Dion Trieb, Vice President of Eastridge Workforce Solution’s Construction Division commented: “The first quarter was slower than expected and there was not a lot of hiring, which was heavily impacted by the weather. Now the faucet is starting to trickle and we’re seeing companies starting to rehire and bid at a ferocious pace. Our offices are seeing an increase in employment, which mirrors the statistics in April’s BLS report. Over the next few months, I expect the markets that have been lagging are going to see positive indicators of growth as well, such as Phoenix.”
